This is an incredibly difficult question that one database attempts to answer.  Online database Numbeo has complied data to determine the countries with the best quality of life in Africa. Numbeo is the world’s largest database of user contributed data about cities and countries worldwide. Numbeo provides current and timely information on world living conditions including cost of living, housing indicators, health care, traffic, crime and pollution.

Numbeo provides a tool to see, share and compare information about cost of living worldwide, by providing online software which:

  • provides to a reader of a website prices for free
  • uses wisdom of the crowd to get as reliable data as possible
  • provides a system for systematic research on cost of living and property markets
  • calculates derived indices such as cost of living index, local purchasing power, etc.

The Quality of Life Index is an estimation of overall quality of life by using an empirical formula which takes into account purchasing power index (higher is better), pollution index (lower is better), house price to income ratio (lower is better), cost of living index (lower is better), safety index (higher is better), health care index (higher is better), traffic commute time index (lower is better) and climate index (higher is better).

Important to remember when looking at this data is that it is quantitive, meaning is it based off numbers and data. The qualitative, or subjective, quality of life is not and cannot be measured through this data set. As such, this data provides an objective view of life in Africa.
