The magnificent buffalo wildlife forms part of the ‘big 5’ and is Africa’s only wild cattle species. With its bulky physique and thick horns, the wildlife animal is described as dangerously strong and imposing. Buffaloes have proven to have the tendency to attack and kill people, especially when threatened by hunters; these beasts will not back off.
The length of the Buffalo can reach up to 3.4 metres with a weight of up to 900kg and a height of up to 1.7m. The African buffalo has an extensive chest, hefty limbs and a huge head. A thin layer of hair covers the body of the animal and is typically brown or black in colour. With imposing horns spread outward and downward from the head, Buffaloes have soft fringe hair above their large and hanging ears. Funny looking is the Buffalo’s long tail with a bunch of hair at the end of it.
Also known as the Forest Buffalo, Savanna Buffalo and Cape Buffalo, there are 4 documented subspecies at the moment which all 4 vary in size and physical appearance. The smallest of its kind is the Forest Buffalo and is red in colour with swept back horns. The Savanna Buffalo has 3 variations: The West African Savanna Buffalo, The Central African Savanna Buffalo and the Southern Savanna Buffalo. The biggest Buffalo from the above mentioned is Southern Savanna Buffalo or the Cape Buffalo.
Did you know that Buffalo’s travel in herds of amounting to over 1000?! The Forest Buffalo however is different in that because of its more constrained habitat, these Buffalo’s form minor groups of up to 12. Bachelor herds are formed when males don’t have a female or companion. This has its disadvantage because living within a herd allows for the animals to share information between and amongst them. The type of information that is shared reflects topics of the best ways to feed, increased protection advice and ideal hunting practises.
Males and females of African Buffalo herds have solid and unbreakable bonds and this evident when for example a herd member is attacked, even by a lion, the other members WILL rapidly respond and help defend the Buffalo being attacked.
